[Program Note]
Concerto per violoncello e orchestra was composed for Arto Noras who is an incredible cellist.
With its large scaled one-movement, the concerto starts with a delicate but tense motion of strings (Andante con delicate). The layer of splendid sound of glockenspiel and xylophone sings a plaintive melody when the cello solo strongly breaks in. A growing intensity of the conversation between the cello and the orchestra finally fades into cello solo. (m.146)
With a luscious choral, a low voice of cello solo which seems to come from a profound abyss (andante sospirando, m.147) is followed by a sudden switch to a joyful scene. (Allegro con animoso, mm.183)
An organic integration of the powerful melody of cello and the orchestra develop into the first climax of the piece. A mellow song of cello solo brings an end to this epic climax (moderato expressive, m.256) and the choral, played by the strings and the woodwinds unfold. (m.273)

An exchange of ascending theme of the woodwinds and descending theme of cello accumulates the power and introduces Chaconne (m.310) followed by fugatto, which is replaced by a cadenza of cello solo. This sophisticated introduction later joins the orchestral fugue, which leads to the choral of the strings. (mm.424) After passing moderato Pastorale (m.465), the piece glides into the climax where colorful contrapuntal movement explodes. (m. 590)
The piece gets its breath back in Moderato con Sentimento (mm.619) and starts to increase from 640th measure (Allegro Vivace).
